Pair of advertising broadsides for the Sutro Baths of San Francisco, California. Date unknown, likely early 1900s. One ad for an "Aquatic Carnival" printed in red and blue ink w/ graphics of American flags and a bald eagle. Notable creasing and some tearing at top and bottom edges., very minimal toning, bold colors, 16"x12".One ad for the "International Water Cycle" w/ photo, significant creasing and tearing, 17"x13.5".
The Sutro Baths were once a landmark of San Francisco; this massive public bathing complex included six saltwater pools, one freshwater pool, a museum, an amphitheater, and an ice skating rink. They were built in the 1890s as a public gift of millionaire Adolph Sutro, who made his fortune constructing the Sutro Tunnel that allowed for the excavation of the Comstock Lode. Sutro became a massively influential figure in San Francisco, known for numerous philanthropic acts as well as one lackluster term as mayor. Through the early 1900s, the Baths fell into disrepair, finally being destroyed by a fire in the 1960s.
