A framed certificate of incorporation from the California Department of State for the Sutro Railroad Company dated July 28th, 1894. The certificate includes a vignette with California's coat of arms, as well as a golden state seal with a ribbon. It is signed by Edmund G. Waite, California's secretary of state. Certificate is matted within an ornate wooden frame. Some water damage on lower matting and chipping/wear on frame; see photos.
The company bears the name of Adolph Sutro, a Prussian-born mining engineer that made his fortune after moving to America at age 21. Sutro created the Sutro Railroad Co. to construct and operate a streetcar railroad that took passengers to the S.F. Cliff House and Sutro Baths; this new line was meant to compete with Southern Pacific Railroad, which had bought out and raised the fare of the rail that had previously serviced these locations.
Sutro was a notable figure in the history of both Nevada and California. Perhaps his most well-known accomplishment was the construction of the Sutro Tunnel, a drainage tunnel connected to the Comstock Lode that allowed for exploration of the site. The sale of his interest in the Sutro Tunnel Company following its success allowed him to fund the Cliff House as well as his public 'gifts' to San Francisco, including an aquarium and an extremely popular public bathing complex called the Sutro Baths. These 'gifts' propelled him into popularity among San Franciscans, eventually leading to his election as the city's 24th mayor.
