Rare unused stationery for the Sutro Tunnel Company. Dateline Sutro, Lyon Co., Nevada, 187-. 8.5 x 5.5" Folds, toning. The Sutro Tunnel, completed in 1879 under Adolph Sutro's leadership after more than a decade of work, was a 3.88-mile drainage and access tunnel driven from the Carson River Valley to intersect the Comstock Lode at the 1,640-foot ("1,600-foot") level of the mines. Built at a cost of roughly $5 million, it drained millions of gallons of water daily, provided vital ventilation, and allowed ore to be hauled out more efficiently, transforming deep mining on the Comstock.
