Although not the most eye appealing, this is the historically more important first rendition of Sutro Tunnel Stock. Very rare! Certificate No. 68. Dateline New York, October 18, 1868. Solomon Haas of New York is issued 85 shares. Signed by Adolph Sutro, Duly Authorized Agent of the Association known as the Sutro Tunnel Company. Sutro's signature is pen cancelled but legible. Vignette upper left of miner with pick. US Internal Revenue adhesive stamp attached bottom left with Sutro cancellation. Discoloration, pin holes, and a 1 inch tear bottom left. Reverse is signed by Haas' lawyer. Sutro first came up with the idea of the tunnel in 1860, got federal and state approval in 1865, and construction began in 1869. He envisioned the tunnel as taking care of the water problem that Comstock mining operations were encountering at depth. As Sutro said in his proposal, "the great obstacle to be encountered in mines is water; this is the fatal agent, which makes it only a question of time, when a mine will have to be abandoned, no matter how rich..." The tunnel was completed in 1878, too late to be of critical importance to the Comstock. Sutro sold his shares and moved to San Francisco, where he eventually became mayor. Includes background information, blank 187- Sutro Tunnel receipt for stock, and a copy of the Sutro Tunnel Plat Map.
