German-born Swiss immigrant John Sutter received a land grant in the Alta California (High California) province from the government of Mexico in 1839, and he established and agricultural enclave he named New Helvetia. He constructed Sutter's Fort there between 1841 and 1843. After gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill in Coloma, the fort was abandoned as gold prospectors and miners overran New Helvetia and Sutter lost control of his land grant. the City of Sacramento developed around the location of the fort. The Fort was restored by the Natives Sons of the Golden West beginning in 1891 and turned over to the State of California in 1893. This lot of about 50 postcards (10 B&W including some RPCs and 41 color including some chromoliths) contains images of Sutter's Fort before and after restoration along with exhibits that commemorate the local history.
