Cert. #65, issued for 50 shares to Nicolaus Draestinovitch. Signed by W.J. Holmes, the corporate secretary. Fully issued, but undated. The secretary signed twice for the president as well, "W.J. Holmes for the president". This must not have been the usual proceedure, so Holmes forgot to date the certificate. The co. was incorporated in 1874, and with this low certificate number, it was likely 1874 or 1875. Location of mine: Monte Christo, Sierra Co., Cal. at top right. Place of business, Downieville, Sierra Co., Cal. at left. This firm only had a total capital of $20,000 with 1000 shares authorized at $20 each. So, our 50 shares were 5% of the float. Monte Christo was located about 3 mi. north of Downieville, near Poker Flat. An internet search showed a Swallow mine was located there. The diggings were on the main Blue Lead, with extensive drift mining as early as 1852 (Gudde, California Gold Camps). Nice millsite vignette and an allegorical female holding a scale and sword at left. Uncancelled. City: Downieville State: California Date: HWAC# 51235
