Extremely rare express company letterhead. Dateline Bryan, Wyoming Territory, Jan. 6th, 1871. Addressed to post trader WA Carter at Fort Bridger. Message from Wm. Bonham about a draft. Soiling/water damage on right side. 10 x 8" We could not find much information about the Sweetwater Stage & Express Company (including on newspapers.com). It appears it ran from Green River to Fort Washakie in the Wyoming Territory. W.A. Carter was the post trader at Fort Bridger beginning in 1858. Along with his family, Carter lived at the fort, rebuilding and stocking it and eventually becoming Wyoming's first millionaire. The fort was located in a site originally in Utah Territory, later Uinta County, Wyoming. It became a vital resupply point for wagon trains on the Oregon Trail, California Trail, and Mormon Trail. The Army established a military post here in 1858 during the Utah War, until it was finally closed in 1890.
