This is a Swiss made Vetterli rifle built about 1870, S/N 103731, 15,200 were built in Thun, Switzerland by Von Steiger. This is a unique rifle in a number of ways; the rifle was the first bolt action design with a tubular magazine, it holds 12 rounds in the tube and fires a rim-fire cartridge. A fork shaped firing pin in the bolt would double punch the cartridge to insured ignition. Revolutionary for its time but never used in an armed conflict by the Swiss. The Inspector's mark is still visible on the butt-stock; the forestock has been shortened. This gun is an antique and no attempt has been made to fire this gun to confirm its mechanical integrity, nor should this gun be fired without the examination by a qualified gunsmith. Any attempt to fire an antique gun is at the risk of the owner and not consistent with the value if the firearm. There may be additional shipping and handling charges. No sales to New York City, New Jersey, California, and Hawaii. Additional shipping may apply.
