Rare territorial Montana: T.C. POWER & BRO. / 50 / FT MAGINNIS M.T. (all incuse)
(blank); Br., rd., 35 mm.
Located on the east side of the Judith Mountains, Fort Maginnis was established in 1880 by companies of the 3rd Infantry Regiment under the command of Captain Daingerfield Parker. It was named for Major Martin Maginnis, Montana’s territorial delegate to Congress. Elements of the 1st United States Cavalry Regiment garrisoned the post beginning in 1881. The T. C. Power & Bro. Dry Goods Store still stands in Fort Benton, although there's nothing left of Fort Maginnis.
Thomas C. Power first came to Montana in 1864, partnering with his brother, J. W. Power. In 1876 they started T. C. Power and Bro., a mercantile company throughout the northwestern U. S. and Western Canada.
