DENVER RAILROAD HISTORY: Denver and Northwestern Railway was incorporated in 1901. This was to be an electric system with lines projected from Denver to Greeley, Louisville, Boulder, Golden, and Littleton. Incorporation papers were amended in 1902 to include provision for an electric line to South Boulder, Rollinsville, Middle Park to Hot Sulphur Springs via Rollins Pass. In 1902 the Denver, Northwestern, and Pacific Railroad (Moffat Road) incorporated. The plan was to build west from Denver to Salt Lake City and connect with William Clark’s [Clark's Road] Salt Lake, Los Angeles railroad. Moffat arranged financing through a group of Providence capitalists headed by Marsden Perry and a wealthy family from Holland. By 1907 the line was still a long way from the Routt County coal fields. THE CODE BOOK: So let's see how this Code Book fits into the history. The top line of "Extra Code" is for the Denver & Northwestern Railway. DH Moffat has a code. Clark's Road has a code. The Denver, Northwestern & Pacific Railroad has a code. The Routt Coal Company has a code. Denver City Tramway has a code and so does FG Moffat. Moffat was on the board of directors of both the tramway and railroad company. SM Perry and Thomas Keely have codes. They were both on the board of directors for the railroad. This is no doubt a book to keep telegraphic secrets from major competitors and opportunistic real estate moguls. As such it is a great Colorado historical find. NEVADA CONNECTION?: The book has a Wells Fargo, Virginia stamp throughout. Its authenticity is in question. State: Colorado City: Denver HWAC#: 46685 Date: c1901
