Rare book: Temple Bar, the City Golgotha: A Narrative of the Historical Occurrences of a Criminal Character Associated with the Present Bar, by James Holbert Wilson. First edition, 1853, Publisher David Bogue, London. Hardcover, red cloth cover with gilt lettering. Has 68 pages, with colored lithographic frontispiece and 1 other plate. A history of the Temple Bar from 1660 to 1772, with footnotes making references to contemporary authors, including Dickens. Comes with hand-written letter, dated April 11, 1853, gifting the book to someone - James Walsh Esq. Also inside cover is hand-written the name of a later owner, with date and other information - "Alfred C. Reed March 22, 1928 London. Purchased from Harding's Book Shop in Great Russell Street." Three period newspaper reviews of the book are pasted inside the back cover, along with a sticker which reads, "Bound by Bone & Son, 76. Fleet Street, London." Pages intact but spine loose inside front cover only, and slight wear on corners. Measures approx. 8 1/4 in. by 6 1/4 in.
