Ultra-rare Bodie token, c.1890. Temple Saloon / Delury & Garcia / Bodie, Cal. // 12 1/2 / Cents. NGC, XF 40. Brass, 25mm. Probably the finest known graded. Only known saloon token from this famous Mono County mining camp. George Delury's story is a familiar one for those who tried to strike it rich in California and Nevada. He first tried his luck on the Comstock Lode in the 1870s. There he met Isabella Ward, who would later become his wife in 1888. When Virginia City began its decline, George followed the excitement south and joined his brother John in Bodie in 1882. (John had been working as a butcher in Kilgore's Union Market on Main Street.) George bought the Temple Saloon with Rosalio Garcia in the late 1880s. The Temple burned down in 1892, but they rebuilt it. That same year, Delury was elected Justice of the Peace for the Bodie Township. Delury also served on the Wide Awake Hose Company (Bodie Fire Department). Bella married him in Bodie in 1888 but returned to her home town (Virginia City) to give birth to their two children: Eva in 1889, and Savilla in 1892.
