This piece is loaded with history, but you just didn't know it until now...
Frederick Starr was head of the anthropology/archaeology department at the University of Chicago. He was unarguably one of the best known American archaeologists of the period. Prior to this certificate being issued, Starr had made seven trips and expeditions to Mexico, each of which lasted at least three months. His latest was reportedly several more months that also involved 1200 miles on horseback in the outback of Mexico exploring Aztec treasures.
Starr organized an outstanding exhibit of Mexico treasures specifically for this Expo. He filled a good part of the building between the Woman's building and the Government building. While he was in Nashville, he also gave lectures to Vanderbilt students. Several lengthy interviews with Starr were published in the Nashville Tennesseean in May, 1897.
This certificate is for his Mexico display.
