"For value Received I assign to WH Russell two hundred fifty share of the capital stock of Star Gold Mining Co. of Colorado, this 27 day of Sept. Anno Domini, 1864." Star Gold Mine operated on the Crystal Lode in Clear Creek County.

William Hepburn Russell (1812–1872) was a businessman. He was a partner, along with Alexander Majors and William B. Waddell, in the freighting firm Russell, Majors, and Waddell and the stagecoach company the Central Overland California and Pikes Peak Express Company which was the parent company of the Pony Express. His public life is one of numerous business ventures, some successful and some failed. Arriving in Colorado in 1854, he and his partners found a small amount of gold before moving onto founding the Pony Express.
