Lot of six Nevada Territory assessment receipts. All have Virginia dateline. Identical form for two different companies. Two are for the Santa Rosa Gold and Silver Mining Company (Oct. 5 and 21, 1863). Towne & Bacon Printers in S.F. Four are for Bonanza Gold and Silver Mining Company (Sept. 1863-January 1864). J.P. Le Count Stationer. We were able to locate three different Santa Rosa mining companies in Nevada for that period. One in Virginia City (A St. near Best & Belcher, Gould & Curry), one in the center of Gold Hill, and one outside of Carson City. Based on W. Rose's Revised Chart of the Comstock Mines and Sutro Tunnel (1878, printed by Payot, Uphan & Co., S.F.), we believe that the Santa Rosa in question was the one in Virginia City. Rose's map shows the Bonanza mine very close to the Santa Rosa. Given that they are located close to each other spatially and their forms are identical, we believe they may have been related. These are rare, early receipts from lesser known mining companies. Wear on receipts are folds and light soiling. They measure 3.5" x 7.25" (Prag Collection)
