Nevada's only territorial governor was James Warren Nye. In 1860, Nye campaigned for William Seward in his presidential campaign. After Abraham Lincoln received the party nomination, Nye avidly campaigned for him. Lincoln commissioned Nye as governor of Nevada Territory, created by Congress on March 2, 1861. Among Governor Nye's goals, once he assumed his new office, were to tame the remote territory, to hasten Nevada toward admission to the Union, and to redeem his ambition to become a U.S. Senator. He reached that goal being appointed as one of the new state's first United State Senators. Sarah Winnemucca related in her book Life Among the Paiutes that Nye was the "only governor who ever helped my people." The check is made out to Harrington & Kinkead. Harrington was a real 49er. He arrived in the Utah Territory (Nevada) in 1859. Kinkead also arrived in Nevada in 1859 and opened a mercantile business. He would later become Nevada Governor. The firm of Kinkead, Harrington, & Co. has an ad in the 1861 first Territorial Directory of Nevada. January 25, 1862. Check number 30. For $300.00. This large amount had something to do with establishing a government in Nevada - but what! Much more information on these three people is included.
