Lot of 16 typed half-pages, with B&W photograph, describing the life and time of Samuel T. Hauser, infamous businessman and seventh Territorial Governor of MT (1885 - 1887). These pages appear to be a draft of an article intended for publication as part of a 1950 Montana State University Alumni Reunion. On what appears to be the final page, mention of entertainment that will "conclude the evening" is followed by "Their appearance here is sponsored by the Spokane alumni of Montana State University." On page one, the first sentence reference to events happening in November 1863 being "nearly a century ago," along with arithmetic written on the last page, suggest this draft was being prepared for an alumni meeting in 1950. Copious penciled notations on most pages suggest this was an early draft for the final printed piece. Note: this draft paints a rosy picture of Samuel Hauser, stating he was a "Pioneer banker, miner, surveyor, railroad builder . . . a man to never knew when to quit." Contemporary accounts of his legacy expose a darker side to his business endeavors and personal ethics (financial misconduct, lost fortunes, hydroelectric dam failures) while acknowledging his role as a key figure in the development of the Montana Territory and eventual statehood. Photograph size: 3 3/4" x 5 1/2" mounted on heavy cardboard sized 7 7/8" x 10 7/8". A sheet of brown onion paper serves as a cover to the photo. The spine includes a cloth string which appears to be ornamental. Beneath the lower right corner of the photo is a handwritten name Kinery (sp? photographer) with 1911 below the name, so photo taken three years before Hauser's passing in 1914.
