Franz Trevors, Nevada Gaming Artist. Paintings for the Palace Club (1943-44). In 1943, with his son Silvo in the military, John Petricciani leased the Palace Club for five years, to Ernie Primm, Joe Hall, Archie Sneed, Jim Contratto, and Elmer "Baldy" West [Ref: The Rise of the Biggest Little City, Kling, 2000, p. 125]. It was around that time that Franz Trevors was commissioned to produce a set of large paintings, which he styled after Charles Marion Russell (1864-1926). Trevors was born in Texas in 1907 and, like many painters of the time, was influenced by painters like Remington and Russell. Trevors' paintings (c. 1943-1944) for the Palace Club were stunning reproductions of five of Russell's paintings: "The Bucker" (1904), "Loops and Swift Horses are Surer than Lead" (1916), "The Holdup" ( 1899), "Smoke of a .45" ( 1908), and " a Desperate Stand (1898).

Felix Turillas (Sr & Jr). Another Reno iconic gaming family was Felix Turillas Sr. and his son Felix Jr. Turillas Senior worked for or managed a number of Reno clubs after the gaming prohibition repeal (1931), lastly the Northern Club (1939-41). From there, he worked in Winnemucca, and according to one source, opened The Big Meadows Club in Lovelock in 1940, managing it through 1960. Turillas Jr. opened The Bank Club (Felix's Bank Club) in Lovelock in 1953, and ran it to 1977. According to family sources, Turillas Jr. knew Franz trevors. Turillas Jr. undoubtedly had seen the great paintings in the Palace club in Reno, and commissioned his own i 1944. there were six paintings in all, all enlarged versions of the Charles Russell originals. These paintings hung in The Bank Club in Lovelock until 1977 when they were retired.

This painting of Trevors', "The Bucker" has the cowboy on a bucking horse in the desert as a rabbit comes out of the brush. Russell had his cowboy on the bucking horse in the desert--no rabbit. Trevors' paintings closely adhered to Russell's colors, composition, and subjects, and are truly stunning works of art. Trevors perfectly captured the spirit and tradition of Russell's image, but he added his own personal touch with a detail not present in the master's original version. Trevors continued to paint until his death in March 1980. Although there is painfully little information available about his life and works, his paintings hang in various venues in New Mexico. Trevors' paintings merged the feeling of the Old West with the spirit of Reno's growing gambling empire, making these works unique additions to any Old West, Reno, or Gambling enthusiasts' collection. Painting in excellent condition, 6' x 4'. State: Nevada City: Date: 1944 FHWAC#: 43625
