Vol 1 #1-10, May 28 1864 - July 30 1864. The 2nd issue discusses how the reception of this newspaper is very kind, contains ghost stories, dramatic news, a number of stories by unnamed authors. Of particular interest is a four part series on Washoe by "a lady" who goes by the pen name "Pigeon Wing." The series is long, constituting a full page for each of the four insertions, and was of such importance at the time that the second and third installments made the front page. The series starts July 9, 1864, issue #7, "Our Trip to Washoe".Ms. Pigeon Wing is clearly a very educated person, and never reveals the reason for "their" trip to Washoe. They stayed at the prestigious International Hotel. I do not recall any mention of this series. I doubt very seriously of these important observations have been published since.

Another very interesting article appears on July 16, a lengthy article thought to be by Fitz Hugh Ludlow who traveled with Bierstadt in 1863 for 7 weeks in Yosemite. "A Glimpse of California thorough New York Spectacles".

The front of this custom protective holder contains an important document from John Howell Books. Howell was the exceptionally important book and Americana dealer who we credit with the beginning of the western Americana business. The five page treaties included her regards issues march 18- dec 30 1865 entitled Bret Harte's copy of the Californian. This indicates these were all Bret Harte's original copies of this important magazine which had an interesting masthead "The Californian, Surely there is a vain for the silver and a place for gold where they fin it" Vol 1 copy has been professional conserved and repaired at edges. This is a very rare first ten issue set possibly one of only a couple in existence.
