9 certificates. Originally formed as the Belpre and Cincinnati Railroad in 1845 and then the Marietta and Cincinnati Railroad, it was absorbed by the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (B& O). In 1882 when taken over by the B& O it's name was changed to the Cincinnati, Washington, and Baltimore Railroad and then again to the B& O in 1889.

Orland Smith (May 2, 1825 – October 3, 1903) was a railroad executive and a brigade commander in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He led a spirited bayonet charge during the Battle of Wauhatchie that took a significant Confederate position on a hill that now bears his name.
