Newspaper reports of the death of James Garfield by the Cleveland Plain Dealer (September 22, 1881) and The Cleveland Herald (September 23, 1881). Although he was shot on July 2 in a Washington train station, he died in the White House, despite efforts of doctors, who had called in inventor Alexander Graham Bell who tried out his new metal detection device to find the bullet that eventually killed the 20th President of the United States. There's also an interesting account of "Three Beardless Youths' robbing an Iron Mountain Railway train of $16,000. Historic newspapers indeed. Please see photos for more details. Cleveland Ohio
