1) Leather trunk recovered in one piece from the S.S. Central America shipwreck. The trunk was owned by Lieutenant John D. Dement, who had left the gold fields of California to visit the East Coast before returning to his home in Oregon. He was one of the 50 men rescued by the Norwegian barque Ellen, and on his return trip to the West Coast aboard the steamer S.S. John Stephens, Mr. Dement gave an interview with H.D. Barrows who published his account of their conversation in the Annual Publication of the Historical Society of Southern California and Pioneer Register, Los Angeles, Vol. 4, No. 1 (1897), pp. 70-75. Mr. Dement would put the blame for the disaster squarely on "a heartless, greedy, money-making company" (the United States Mail Steamship Company). 2) Trunk lining found in the Dement Trunk (5 pieces) Piece number one measures approximately 5.75 inches x 16.5 inches. Has two possibly fastener marks on fabric. Piece number two measures approximately 6 inches x 6.5 inches with round circle 1.5 in diameter with a circle indent possibly a fastener mark 1.25 inches in diameter with small possible fastener mark in center, approximately .75 inch in center. Piece number three measures approximately 6.5 inches x 4.5 inches Piece number four measures approximately 6 inches x 2.5 Inches with a circle design in fabric 1.5 in diameter with what looks like a small indent in center approx. .75 from top center. Piece number five measures approximately 21.5 inches x 27 inches with three 23 inch x 1.25 inches straps. It appears that lining has a criss cross pattern in fabric, heavily stained on all pieces Piece number six measures approximately 1.5 inches x 1.5 inches, it appears to be a canvas material. It appears to have a woven design with two red strips down each side, there are small possible fastener attachments on the bottom. 3) Trunk Lining from the Easton Trunk (?) Approximate measures 7.5 inches x 7.5 inches Criss cross pattern that appear to be of a textile material. Very fragile.
