Possibly California. Possibly Virginia. Location not determined using our extensive databases and references incl. Filer, CDNC, and newspapers.com. We suspected this might by the Eagle Gold Mining Co. in Colorado, but Hollister (1867) says the company went dormant in June 1865 and "will likely remain so until further development in the art of treating Colorado ores." In the 1865 Pennsylvania Act that incorporated this company, they mention that the corporation may "take, hold and receive, in its corporate name, property, real and personal and mixed, in the state of California..." Was this a California mining operation? We found 1860s references on CDNC to "Bald Eagle," "Gray Eagle," "Double Eagle", "Golden Eagle", etc. but not this company. We've also sold Eagle Gold Mining Company stocks for a mine in Stafford County, Virginia. By 1847, it was operated by the Virginia Gold Belt Company of Philadelphia who changed the name from Rappahannock to Eagle Gold Mine. By 1850, it was owned by Bettle Paul of Philadelphia. In 1860, Samuel Smith of Boston bought it. Mining was carried on here continuously from the 1830s until 1861. Eagle Mine re-opened after the Civil War and mining continued sporadically here until around 1897. Certificate number 8, issued for 330 shares to P.K. Ball on Nov. 13th, 1865 in Philadelphia. Signed by president John S. Graff and treasurer Isaac Flickinger. Not cancelled. Black border and print, vignette of eagle surrounded by allegorical imagery (top center) and vignette of prospector (left). Printed by Stein & Jones, Phila. Folds, two pinholes, small stains. 7.5 x 10.75" Ken Prag Collection
