Unusual name for a mining company! Mine location printed on the certificate as Pima Co. Arizona. No. 487, issued to Virginia Harper for 30 shares on Feb. 15th, 1883 in Camden, N.J. Signed by I.B. Baker as president and by Geo. Matthews as secretary. Nice vignette at upper right of numerous prospectors working a rock face. Black border with floral "buttons" and two floral arrangements within the border, yellow safety print. "Issued for Property Purchased" in red script diagonally across face of certificate. Datelined: Camden, N.J.Folds, light toning around edges. Very fine. The story is told that the Gunsight Mine was discovered by prospectors in November 1878 and so-named because the nearby mountain looked like a gunsight. Soon the miners came for the rich silver ore and Gunsight camp was established. The Post Office was established in 1892, and at that time the mine was producing under the aegis of the Silver Gert Mining Company. There were 8 buildings at the site and 40 employees. The vein was over 4 feet wide, reached by a 340 foot shaft. It was the richest mine in the district. By 1896 the Post Office closed. [Ref: Mines Register, 1922].
