This archive is a classic story of western European immigrants coming to America and settling in Nevada to make a new life. Instead of mining, brothers Hans and P.N. Marker, as partners, went into ranching on Nevada’s deserts and semi-dry valleys around Winnemucca. Marker bought property at Big Meadows, and at one time routinely ran 600 to 1200 head of cattle. His obituary stated that he made “the desert blossom like a rose”. Born in Denmark in 1845, Marker came to America in 1872 and settled in Washoe City, where they started a wood, lumber and stock business. He moved to Big Meadows in 1875 and immediately planted hundreds or more trees. He and his wife had 11 children

After time, Marker settled in Big Meadows, later Lovelocks, where he raised his family. P.N. Marker went to Washoe Valley, but kept an interest in the business. Hans died in 1904 of throat cancer.

Marker was also active in the nursery business, getting thousands of trees to the region. Marker’s son, L.N. Marker became a blacksmith and lumber/hardware dealer in Lovelock. When the post-1900 mining boom hit the Lovelock area around Seven troughs, Vernon, Mazuma etc., Marker started a satellite store in Vernon. A separate lot contains most of the Vernon business records, though there are about two dozen examples in this archive.

The archive is split into two basic parts: H.C. Marker and L.N. Marker. H.C. Marker’s papers include old receipts, correspondence and business correspondence, including ranch land leases, purchases and sales, as well as cattle sales, tax records, annual sales records, etc. He also ran several different businesses, including a hay and grain dealership. In 1880 alone, Marker ranched more than 12 sections of land, a sizeable task in Nevada at the time. His most valuable asset that year were his cattle and horses. Marker’s business even contracted to build the Laurel Hill Cemetery in Lovelock in 1884.

Marker’s correspondence from his home country is in Lot 3289, though there are three or four examples in this archive. Some records are of Chinese in Lovelock.

The archive contains thousands of documents (about one cubic foot), though two thirds are of the H.C. Marker business. A third are L. Marker’s business.
