Issued in 1865 to Benjamin F. Bayley for one share at $100 each. Signed by C.H. Sanborn as president and Bayley as treasurer. Twenty five cent revenue affixed at the top stamped with the company back stamp Feb. 23, 1865. The Civil War (1861-1865) caused a shortage of whiskey. Not only were many men drawn from their day jobs to fight in the war, but many battles were fought in the major American whiskey distilling regions (Colleen Graham, about.com). This certificate was issued just over a month before the civil war ended. Uncancelled. EF.
