Classic reference hardcover book by J.D. Whitney. The title page indicates "Described and Compared With That of Other Countries" below the main book title listed above. This book has been described as a key reference, and a choice reference. Among other subjects, it discusses several hundred active mines in the US in the 1850's. There are (44) woodcut illustrations listed, along with (3) mine section lithographs as well. In addition to the US, other chapters in this book illuminate 'Mineralogical Occurrence' of mercury, tin, copper, zinc, iron and lead, both in the US and in other countries of the world. This is in addition to gold and silver, of course. A superb reference for any collector, this book is in very good to near excellent condition, particularly for its age. Spine is very good, pages secure and fully intact. Minor wear on the corners and spine edges. Book measures nearly 10"x6.5"x1.25. Please inspect, as we imagine this will be a revelation.
