The Miner's Compendium and Guide: A COMPENDIUM OF VALUABLE INFORMATION FOR THE PROSPECTOR, MINER, GEOLOGIST, MINERALOGIST AND ASSAYER; TOGETHER WITH A COMPREHENSIVE GLOSSARY OF TECHNICAL PHRASES USED IN THE WORK - San Francisco: Published by Julius Silversmith, "Mining and Scientific Press" Office, Government House, 1861. 232 pp. including illustrations and 22 pp. of ads. 16mo. Original printed paper boards, neatly rebacked in calf. Boards worn and scuffed. Minor foxing, two dozen leaves (scattered throughout text) with old stains in center portion. Good. In a cloth clamshell box, leather label. One of the more sought-after miner's guides filled with much information on advances in mining technology and mineralogy. Silversmith crafted his work as a "portable mineralogical compendium" and focused not only on gold mining, but on other minerals such as silver, copper, iron, lead, and coal. He draws on the work of Whitney, Werner, and other geologists, and also includes information on the latest mechanical systems for mining and processing gold, many of which are illustrated with handsome engravings. Filled with practical advice and instructions. The ads are mostly for San Francisco businesses, including machinists, printers, grocers, and more. Many focus on the needs of the miner with an ad on the inside cover for the steamship Panama and an ad on the rear cover for the Assay office of Waters & Co. (late Blake & Co.). Index in rear. This copy has a few pencil notes on the rear endpapers, indicating early use by a miner. "A much used guide, with many interesting illustrations of mining apparatus" - Howell. COWAN, p.430-31.
