1) Includes a map 9 x 15". The publishers of this booklet, Jay Cooke and Company, were the financial managers and marketers of the Northern Pacific Railroad. They printed many pamphlets such as this one, extolling the nature of the northwest and the benefits of the railroad itself. The railroad held huge land grants, extending up to fifty miles to either side of the prospective tracks, and as such it was in the business of trying to sell the land to future settlers, prospectors, miners, or whomever would buy. Most of the transcontinental route on this map is still in the planning stages at this time- by the end of 1871 track had only reached as far west as Fargo, North Dakota. They would eventually get to the West Coast. Their route is now part of the Burlington Northern. 2) Also includes the 1877 Report of the President and Directors to the Stockholders. 18 pages. Includes a report on earnings and how different sections are faring.
