Rare and important. Harvard Case Histories in Experimental Science, James Bryant Conant, Editor. 1967. 59pp. Pen notations. The overthrow of the phlogiston theory occurred in the late 18th century when Antoine Lavoisier demonstrated that combustion and rusting were not due to the release of a fire-like element called phlogiston, but rather the chemical combination of substances with oxygen. Through careful experiments with closed systems, Lavoisier showed that mass was conserved and that oxygen played a central role in combustion and respiration. This shift marked the foundation of modern chemistry, replacing speculative ideas with quantitative experimental science and helping establish the chemical revolution.
