RARE! Early Georgia Gold Mining Stock Certificate. Number 21 for 100 shares to S. Henry Morse. 1867. Signed by secretary AKP Joy and president Benjamin Hamilton. Vignettes of above ground and hydraulic mining. Stock is in rough condition: tears on edges at folds, three heavy vertical folds, 3/8' rip at one of the folds, staining. Still a must-have piece for any East Coast Gold Collector. President Benjamin Hamilton was a methodist minister from North Carolina. He voted against secession. He was well known in Georgia Mining Circles. In 1856 he owned mines in Burke County. It was here that the Van Dyke Hydraulic Hose was tested. In 1860 he was associated with the Cavenders Creek and Ward's Creek Hydraulic Hose Mining Company and the Chestatee River & Town Hydraulic Mining Company. In 1863 he was associated with the formation of the Augusta and Dahlonega Mining Company under the Confederate States of America. He gained control of the Stephenson Mine in 1866. He sold 1/3 to the Dahlonega Mining Company. [Yeats, 1860 and 1863 Acts Passed by the General Assembly of Georgia, Thomas Lanier Clingman by Jeffrey] This company could have been named for the Benjamin Parks credited with finding gold in Georgia, and the East Coast, when he found gold walking along a path on his birthday.
