The Red Mountain mining district was booming in the 1880s with millions of dollars worth of silver ore being mined each year. However, in the early 1890s the price of silver began to decline, so to help the US silver mining industry, the Sherman Silver Purchase Act was passed in 1890. "The mines of the Red Mountain Railroad, Mining and Smelting company, in Ouray County, Colorado, are an accomplished fact--not a prospect. Hundreds of thousands of dollars, and years of labor have been expended to bring then to their present state of development. A very nicely bound prospectus with an image of Red Mountain and raised lettering on the cover, with photos and a fold-out map of the mining district inside.
