Langley (compiler). San Francisco: Excelsior Steam Press: Towne & Bacon, Book and Job Printers. cxii, 679 pp.. Pastedown advertisements included in the pagination. Folding Map printed in black and red "Railroad Map of the City of San Francisco" Britton & Co. 1866 bound in at title page 137/8 x 16" or about 23 x 15.5cm. Map has detailed street and block numbers. There are an many pages of local advertising with many of California's earliest banking houses, mining companies, assayers, express and steamship companies. Contains a wealth of information on residents, businesses, streets, organizations and societies, public institutions, and city government. Slight tear 11/2" at point of attachment. Original printed (advertisements) paper-covered boards with black straight-grained Morocco spine, lettered in gilt. Paper covers stained and worn. (Very slight loss of text), a few chips missing from paper edges, Ex libris label of former owner John J. Ford the well-known Numismatist. The early issues of the Langley directories are important sources of information on San Francisco and have become quite scarce in any condition, but particularly so with the original map.
