Cert. #1451, issued at New York in 1880 to Geo. W. Coward for 100 shares. Inc. in Connecticut. Signed by Geo. Wm. Ballou as president and D.H. Darling as secretary. In 1880, the company was formed and made a contract to buy the Ramirez land grant which was applied for in 1844 and approved by Congress in 1866. The grant was titled the "Canon del Agua" and was adjacent to the San Pedro land grant. The land was located near the placer of San Francisco called the "Placer Del Toro" and distant from that town about one league. When the company purchased the grant, there were already portions of the land and mines in dispute as miners were already working certain areas and contended that the mines were in the public domain. The New Placer district was a large “rich” placer district most active during the 1860’s that has since been cut into several smaller districts. This company ran a water line from the Sandia Mountains to various placer gold camps. They also had a mine, 20 stamp mill (one of the largest of the Territory), and smelter. They tried to get their property patented, but the Government balked at the application for 35,000 acres, and proceeded to bring charges of fraud against the company. The U.S. government was in litigation against the company for many years. Miners working underground vignette. Franklin Bank Note Company, N.Y., printer.
