This 1876 letter is sent from Mr. Vanderbilt of the Fort Edward Institution and he wants to know about the eyeless fish found at 127 degrees in the depths of the Savage Mine (which was constantly fighting water at the lower levels). So, why would an educated man working in a house of education want to know about these eyeless fish? And where did he learn about them? It seems that Dan DeQuille wrote a story about these fish in the Territorial Enterprise which was taken up by the New York newspapers in its entirety. Our author was probably hoping to scoop the big institutions. He asks if he can obtain a specimen. And what was the reply from the Savage Mine? "Not a particle of truth in the eyeless fish story. It is a hoax." Letter and DeQuille's's article are transcribed.
