During the 1960s, $1 silver certificates could be redeemed in "silver payable to the bearer on demand." As the price of silver rose above a dollar, Americans turned their Silver Certificates into the San Francisco or New York Assay Offices and received bullion silver like this in exchange. The 5 1/2 x 3" lucite holder has the top portion of a Silver Certificate and amount of "99.99% pure silver bullion from the U.S. Treasury obtained thru redemption of a silver certificate" "This redemption privilege has now been revoked by Congressional action effective June 24, 1968."

"The Silver Story" is an album with an essay explaining the history of the removal of silver from the currency, and a silver certificate, an 1899 Morgan dollar, a 1923 Peace dollar and the .999 silver granules issued by the assay offices.

Each $1 silver granule package contained .773 troy ounces of pure silver, the amount of silver in a U.S. silver dollar. HWAC# 29045
