This print is a representation of the Umbrella Project at Tejon Pass in California and at the same time in Japan, 1991. This temporary art project was meant to visualize the use and splendor of the land in two separate countries at the same time. In the United States the project ran for 18 miles. Our print depicts the arts' rendering as well as a topographical map of the area and umbrella locations along with two passes dated Oct. 8; a day before it was opened to the general public. The concept was to emphasize inner space, or houses without walls and temporary settlements. In the USA, the umbrellas were of a yellow fabric symbolizing the vast fields of yellow grasses throughout the state of California, while in Japan they used a blue fabric symbolizing the use of water in fields of rice. Our print is signed by the artist Christo and not numbered. There were 3100 umbrellas used for this project; each one was 26 ft. in diameter. The project was closed on October 27th, 1991 and enjoyed by walking through or by passing auto on I -5. The print is framed at 35 in. X 29 in. It includes a back pocket with two post cards depicting the project, two early passes, as well as two swatches of fabric. Please see photos for details.
