I/U. The Union League Silver Mining Co. Stock, issued 1882, two vignettes: top miners working tunnel, left miners working shaft. Embossed seal, Henry Seibert & Bros. printers. Located Gila County, Globe District, Arizona. Balch (1882, p. 1178) reports the company’s property lies 800 feet northwest of Mack Morris mine, in the Richmond basin, Globe mining district. Ransome (1903, pgs. 114-117 and Barns, pgs. 103, 113) report that in 1876 Mack Morris was the locator of the first silver mine in Richmond Basin, where people could actually pick up silver nuggets. Morris’ mine was incorporated in 1881 and became the Union League Silver MC. The Union League name is derived from the Union League, a fraternal organization in support of the Union during and after the Civil War, still in existence today. The main office is in Philadelphia, which today houses the Union League collection. The building and contents are a marvelous complement to the Union theme, and to American history. Extra Rare.
