About this piece, in the words of the Artist: "I grew up in the country and spent much of my youth rambling through the fields, woods and foothills that surrounded my boyhood home in Placerville, California. A love of country places that hearkens back to my childhood shines through the many rural scenes I painted in the mid and late 1980s. In "Dusk in the Valley" a peaceful, fertile farm is guarded by great sentinel mountain peaks. Fences lend a touch of order to the valley and suggest a benign human presence; the grazing cattle always seemed peaceful to me when I met them on my walks. But the scene is not all tranquility; there is drama and energy as well, courtesy of a blazing, golden sunset that seems almost to be a celestial spotlight shining down from the heavens. It may be that, as my life as an artist became more demanding and complex, I turned instinctively to scenes like "Dusk in the Valley", that recalled my roots, my childhood. But even here, the theatrical sunset seems to promise an exciting tomorrow."
