Lot of 3 different. 1) Double Standard Mining Company. Principal Place of Business: Lead City, D(akota) T(erritory) (printed at top). Inc. in Dakota, 1887. No. 144, issued for 1666 shares to A. Ross on in 1888 in Lead City. Signed by president Ernest May and secretary H. May. Pen cancelled. Red border, blue and red printing. Folds, creases, some staining. 5.25 x 8.5" Company held claims on Bald Mountain, 5 miles west of Lead. Ernest May moved to Deadwood in 1876 and mines the Wheeler Claim in Deadwood Gulch. He then opened a mercantile business in Lead, invested in land and mines, served as president of the First National Bank of Lead, was the mayor of Lead, and is credited with the creation of the South Dakota state flag in 1909. 2) Tornado Consolidated Gold & Silver Mining & Milling Company. Dave Shaddrick notes that this mine encountered a fabulously rich stope that produced 1 million ounces of gold, likely while it was under control by Homestake. Inc. in Dakota. "Whitewood Quartz Mining District, Lawrence County, Dakota Territory" printed under title. Blue print and underprint mining vignette. Issued to Ben Baer. Signed by Harris Franklin (president) and the secretary. Stamp cancelled. In a March 17th 1884 article, The Deadwood Pioneer Times reported that the Tornado Consolidated was made up of the Tornado, Silver Fraction, Big Test Fraction, Daisy Fraction, Little Bird, and the Minnie Lode. These mines, about 50 acres, were on the east side of Terry's Peak between the Nevada and Fantail gulches. Extensive developments were reported. Work at the lower levels had found several fissures of high grade ore. Baer and Franklin were also business partners in a Deadwood liquor business. The two also founded the First National Bank of Deadwood. 3) The Ruby Bell Gold & Silver Mining Company. "Ruby Basin South Dakota" printed under title. Issued in 1894 to Cotton Andrews. Signed by Harris Franklin (partner with Seth Bullock) and the secretary. Pen cancelled.
