Three different stocks signed by JP Whitney. Includes: two different Catalpa Mining Company stocks (brown and black), 1884 and 1904. Neither is cancelled. Third stock is for The Crescent Mining Company, issued 1887, and features the same design as the other two. Not cancelled. All have same mining vignette. Joel Parker Whitney was a millionaire and very important figure in Colorado (and Wyoming, New Mexico and California) history. He made a fortune in the California Gold Rush as a merchant before heading to Colorado Territory in the 1860s. He authored an 1865 book on Colorado silver mining that many believe helped establish statehood. He continued to make money in the mining and railroad industries, as well as real estate in California and ranches in New Mexico. (Prag Collection) City: Leadville State: Colorado Date: 1884-1904 ID# 34271
