Lot of 3 different Seconds of Exchange, all with a California adhesive revenue stamp. 1) Tallant & Wilde, Bankers, Nov. 4th, 1857. Issued to Isaac Jennings for $100. 20 cent California State Tax stamp attached on the left. Tallant & Wilde established as a private bank in 1850 during the California Gold Rush. Wilde died in 1863 and John McKee, cashier, joined Tallant to become Tallant & Company. They incorporated as a state bank in 1891. 2) John Sime & Co. February 9th, 1866. Issued to Olivia B. Jennings for $250 to be paid in US gold coin. 60 cent California State Tax stamp and 2 cent US Bank Check stamp attached on the left. Sime came to California in 1849 during the Gold Rush. He began work in carpentering, and opened his banking house in 1856-57. He was very successful and invested in other industries such as the powder mills at Santa Cruz, woolen mills, and rope-walk. He died in 1871 at the age of 54 from something brain-related. After his death, there was a run on his bank that also caused the failing of BF Hastings & Co. bankers in Sacramento (Hastings was Sime's partner). Sime & Co. failed for over $200,000, according to Daily Alta California articles from November, 1871. 3) Wells Fargo & Co. Dec. 18, 1865. Issued to Lydia Lane for $50 to be paid in currency. 20 cent California State tax stamp and 2 cent US IR stamp attached.
