This is a fabulous check for Comstock history collectors. W.S. Hobart personal revenue check (RN-G), Nevada Bank of San Francisco, issued May 25, 1888 in San Francisco to Bonanza King John W. Mackay for $1,411.65. Signed by Hobart. The reverse of the check makes it even more special: rather than being endorsed by Mackay, there are instructions to deposit it in the account of J.C. Flood! As one of the Bonanza Kings, James Clair Flood is rarely seen on documents. O'Brien and Flood were more silent partners and ran financial operations based in San Francisco while Mackay and Fair operated the mines in Virginia City. Flood and O'Brien directly challenged William Sharon & William Ralston's Bank of California, eventually causing it to fail and forming the Nevada Bank of San Francisco. Flood died less than a year after this check was issued. W.S. Hobart was a central figure on the Comstock, making his fortune in lumber (Sierra Nevada Wood & Lumber Co.), mines, mills (Ophir, Sapphire), and water (Virginia & Gold Hill Water Co.). Along with D.L. Bliss, Hobart's lumber operations at Lake Tahoe were essential to the Comstock's mining success. Hobart, Nevada, as well as Hobart Mills, California were both named after him. When the Virginia & Gold Hill Water Company reorganized in 1871, Hobart became a director along with Fair, Mackay, Flood & O'Brien. This check may represent business within this company.
