Three choice stereoviews by different publishers. 1) E. & H.T. Anthony & Co. No. 38--First Log Hut erected in the Grove. Close-up view of the cabin. Nice contrast and detail. 4" x 7." 2) c.1870 John P. Soule, No. 1279. View is farther back with the Big Tree and cabin in shot. 3) c.1874 Watkins, No. 1167, Galen's Hospice. Similar to 2, but from opposite side of the big tee. Galen Clark came to Mariposa in the mid-1850s interested in mining and the reports he'd heard of beautiful Yosemite. He "discovered" the Big Tree Grove on a hunting trip in 1857 and made the public aware of the area. He built a cabin for visitors to the grove and it was known as "Galen's Hospice." In 1907, Clark wrote a book, "Indians of the Yosemite Valley and Vicinity." (Prag Collection) Date: Location: Big Trees, California HWAC # 54751
