Lot of 3. 1) Sierra Nevada Mexican and Union Shaft Company. Nevada Bank of San Francisco. RN-G1. Dateline Virginia, Nev., May 23, 1881. Issued to Carolan, Cory & Co. Signed by Thomas H. Rooney, superintendent. Spindle cancels, some soiling. The Sierra Nevada, Mexican, and Union mines were side-by-side in Sevenmile Canyon, north of the Masonic Cemetery. The Union was the biggest producer, followed by the Sierra Nevada. A Cornish pump, the largest in the world at the time, was installed in the late 1870s to pump the lower levels in the joint Union Shaft. Owned by the Bonanza Firm. 2) Imperial Silver Mining Company. Bank of California. RN-D1. Dateline Virginia, Nev. May 3, 1876. Issued to F. Souther. Signed by C.C. Batterman, well-known Comstock superintendent who also worked on the Gould & Curry, Crown Point, and others. Cut cancel, folds. The Imperial Mine was located in Gold Hill and was part of the "Little Gold Hill Mines" that were staked by Finney, Comstock, Bowers, and others in 1859. It was a successful mine and eventually became part of the Consolidated Imperial Group. 3) Empire Mill & Mining Company. Bank of California. Nevada and IR adhesive revenue stamps attached. Dateline Virginia, Aug. 20th 1868. Signed by R.N. Graves as superintendent. Graves was an important figure on the Comstock, serving as superintendent for the Imperial, Gould & Curry, and other mines.
