One of the many choice books on the California Gold Rush written by a pre-'49er and published in 1850. Inscribed in front piece "Warren Nix, San Fran." probably from the 1850's. First edition, Barnes & Co., New York. Colton was in California for three short years. The book is his diary of daily events, starting with July 27, 1846, just 17 days after the Union Jack was raised at Monterey and San Francisco. Colton was a Navy man, based at Monterey for some time, until brevetted out to find his way among the gold seekers. The book is a marvelous read, talking about major places and personalities. An early map of California is found opposite page 2, along with many illustrations inside. The representations in illustration form of the gold inspections is worth the price alone.Wear to spine ends, bottom of covers, some foxing.
