In the early 1900s Louis Comfort Tiffany designed 24 different patterned desk-sets. The pieces were sold individually, to meet the needs of customers. While some of the more basic pieces are still relatively easy to find, as many as 80 different pieces were made in the most prolific patterns like Pine Needle and Zodiac, making the rarest of those extremely collectible. Nearly 1000 different set pieces were produced between 1900 and 1933 in all patterns combined. (Ref: Tiffany Desk Sets; 2008, William R. Holland) According to Holland, Bookmark is the only pattern that has a special box for rubber bands! Holland states the Bookmark pattern is mostly found in gold finish varieties, sometimes with polychrome colors in the relief areas. He also suggests that the Bookmark pattern was becoming increasingly more popular in the years leading up to 2008, when he published his book, and prices increased correspondingly. Rarer pieces and colored pieces are highly collectible and very valuable. According to "Tiffany Desk Treasures, A Collector's Guide," by George A. Kemeny & Donald Miller, 2002, the Bookmark pattern was one of the 4 earliest patterns produced, along with Zodiac. Kemeny & Miller reference the 1920 Tiffany Studios price list , which notes that the Bookmark pattern features the "typographical marks of the early printers and publishers". They also state, "Based on the 1916 Blue Book, Bookmark pieces were priced above Zodiac, possibly because are more Zodiac was produced; Zodiac also had shallower reliefs and softer detailing. " Rarity (R) ratings are provided according to the chart in William Holland's comprehensive reference on Tiffany Desk Sets: For example: R-1 = "Easy to find"; R-3 = "harder" to find; R-6 "Rarely Seen"; and the rarest rating R-7 "Almost never seen". This lot contains 2 pieces in the busy Bookmark pattern. The numbered pieces in this lot are stamped "Tiffany Studios, New York "unless otherwise noted. See measurements of each piece online.
