In the early 1900s Louis Comfort Tiffany designed 24 different patterned desk-sets. The pieces were sold individually, to meet the needs of customers. While some of the more basic pieces are still relatively easy to find, as many as 80 different pieces were made in the most prolific patterns like Pine Needle and Zodiac, making the rarest of those extremely collectible. Nearly 1000 different set pieces were produced between 1900 and 1933 in all patterns combined.

The popular Venetian pattern resembles an elaborate traditional tooled Italian leather design and came only is gold finishes, with at least 3 patina varieties. The pattern features little critters running around the bottom of most of the pieces, called ermines, which are a weasel-like animal that was often represented in Italian Renaissance artwork, i.e. Leonardo Da Vinci's 'Lady with the Ermine'. The gold finish on Venetian desk pieces was sometimes highlighted with polychrome. Because Tiffany was always willing to customize pieces to accommodate special requests, occasionally the Venetian pattern may be found with other finishes, such as silver. Venetian pieces are well-made and very sturdy and the pattern was a popular choice and made for many years. (Ref: Tiffany Desk Sets; 2008, William R. Holland)

Rarity (R) ratings are provided according to the chart in William Holland's comprehensive reference on Tiffany Desk Sets: For example: R-1 = "Easy to find"; R-3 = "harder" to find; R-6 "Rarely Seen"; and the rarest rating R-7 "Almost never seen"
