A group of four antique drills for drilling large timbers, possibly for mill buildings or underground mine structures. One has the words 'S. MATHER' stamped on either side of its wooden handle. Samuel Mather was an American industrialist who co-founded Pickands Mather and Company, a massively successful shipping and iron company; it's likely that this drill came from his store in Marquette, MI, which sold hardware and tools to mining companies. This would date it to c. 1870. One of the four drills is missing its handle.
