While our company is quite well-known for offering Virginia City, Nevada and Virginia City, Montana items, this was the first time we've handled anything from Virginia City, Colorado. Virginia City is the old name for Tin Cup, Colorado, located in Gunnison County. In 1878, lode deposits were discovered, and the town of Virginia City was laid out in March 1879. As Virginia City, it was incorporated in August 1880, but confusion with the Nevada and Montana towns caused the residents to change the name. In July 1882, the town was reincorporated as Tin Cup. This letterhead is from secretary OH Violet to an undisclosed family member and contains family news. He writes this message from New Orleans. Top of the letterhead says "of Virginia City, Gunnison Co., Colorado" and lists AF Pettengill as president and Violet as secretary. 10.5 x 7.75" Folds, one stain. This company is not listed in C&L. Gold Hill was a mining locality in Gunnison County (and a second name connection to the Comstock). (There was also another Gold Hill in Boulder County).
